9 Opera House

The Opera House is an imposing building on Andrassy Avenue.  It was built to Miklos Ybl's design in neo-Renaissance style and is world famous for the quality of its accoustics.  The opening ceremony took place in 1884 in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph.

The most striking elements of the facade are the two sphinx sculptures of Carrera marble at the corners.  The statues on the upper terrace are all of famous composers.  From left to right they are Claudio Monteverdi, Alessandro Scarlatti, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Gioachino Rossini, Gaetano Donizetti, Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka, Richard Wagner, Giuseppe Verdi, Charles Gounod, Georges Bizet, Modest Petrovich Moussorgsky, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Stanislaw Moniuszko and Bedrich Smetana. On each side of the main entrance is a famous Hungarian composer - Franz Liszt and Ferenc Erkel.  Erkel was the first musical director of the Opera House and was founder of the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra.  He also composed the Hungarian National Anthem.

If you have time to take a guided tour of the building, you'll find a discount coupon in our bonus booklet.
